About Us

The Rekhta Foundation has established a free website, Rekhta.org, with the primary objective of promoting and disseminating Urdu literature. Its aim is to make Urdu literature accessible even to readers who are unfamiliar with the Urdu script. In addition to the Urdu script, all content on the website is available in Devanagari and Roman scripts.Today, the website is read in more than 160 countries around the world. Within a short span of time, it has gained immense popularity and has been highly appreciated by general readers, lovers of Urdu literature, and Urdu scholars from India, Pakistan, and across the globe.Among websites dedicated to Urdu poetry, Rekhta hosts the works of the largest number of poets. It is the world's largest online repository of Urdu poetry, featuring more than 30,000 ghazals and nazms by over 2,500 Urdu poets from the last three centuries. The website offers numerous features that make it highly user-friendly. Its powerful search facility enables readers to easily browse and locate content according to their interests. It also includes a unique built-in glossary that provides the meaning of any word with a single click. To help new readers become familiar with the diction and pronunciation of Urdu, many literary compositions have been recorded in the voices of poets and professional reciters and are available alongside the text.Rekhta has also introduced a special section for beginners in Urdu poetry, where readers are introduced to simple and popular ghazals and nazms, accompanied by video performances by renowned singers, artists, and poets. In addition, Rekhta has launched an important initiative to digitize Urdu literature—both poetry and prose—in order to preserve rare and significant Urdu books. Besides collecting books from private collections, it has collaborated with several libraries and institutions to digitize and preserve their literary holdings.Rekhta also provides a platform for young and emerging poets to showcase their work. As part of this initiative, videos of these poets are recorded and published on the Rekhta website as well as its YouTube channel. In addition, talks, readings, and recordings of prominent literary figures from India, Pakistan, Canada, the Middle East, and other countries are also made available to audiences worldwide. The website has recently been made fully responsive, making it easy to access and navigate on desktops, laptops, tablets, and mobile phones alike. This allows readers even in remote areas to access its vast literary resources with ease.Similarly, apart from its work in Urdu literature, the Rekhta Foundation has successfully launched several other literary platforms. These include Hindwi for Hindi literature, Rekhta Gujarati for Gujarati literature, Anjas for the Rajasthani language, and Sufinama for Sufi literature. All of these platforms host substantial literary collections and have become important repositories for preserving and promoting their respective literary traditions.
