Inderjit Singh Tulsi was a renowned poet and lyricist in Punjabi and Hindi. He was born on April 2, 1926, in Kanha Kada, Lahore. His father's name was S. Mul Singh, and his mother's name was Basant Kaur. Inderjit Singh Tulsi was two years old when his father passed away. After that, his mother raised Tulsi. He completed his Giani studies from Khalsa College in Amritsar. After the partition of India, he got a job in the railways and settled in Ferozepur with his family.
While working in the railway department, he began writing poetry. Once, while reciting poetry at a railway function, Railway Minister Jivan Ram, after listening to his poetry, promoted him and transferred him to New Delhi. He gained fame in poetry conferences and developed close relations with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who invited him to recite poetry at national events. He wrote books such as Sur-Singar, Param Purakh: Guru Nanak Patshah, Badshah Darvesh, and Gobindayan.
Inderjit Singh Tulsi primarily focused on patriotism, but he entered Bollywood as a lyricist. He delivered hit songs like "Pani Re Pani Tera Rang Kaisa" and "Jeevan Chalne Ka Naam." In addition, he worked with producers like Raj Kapoor, N.N. Sippy, and B.R. Chopra, and wrote songs for Hindi films such as Bobby, Chor Machaye Shor, Kalicharan, Karam, and others. Along with that, he also contributed to Punjabi films like Santo Banto, Ladli, and Yaar Gariban Da, among others.
For Inderjit Singh's contributions, in 1962, he was awarded the title of Rajkavi by the Governor of Punjab. He was honored with the Padma Shri for his contributions to art and education. On May 11, 1984, in Bombay, while reciting poetry on stage, he suffered a heart attack and passed away.
