Ahmad Yar

Birth
1768 – 1848

The most prolific Qissakar (narrative poet) in Punjabi literature, renowned for the Qissa of Heer Ranjha.

Ahmad Yar was a renowned Punjabi poet, critic, and historian. He was born in 1768 in the village of Murala, Tehsil Phalia, District Gujrat (now in Pakistan). He was a highly gifted literary figure of his time who made a remarkable contribution to Punjabi literature.

Ahmad Yar authored over 40 books in Punjabi literature, among which 35 were qissas (narrative poems). These qissas are considered important works in the Punjabi literary tradition. His writings dealt with themes of love, history, and society, all expressed in a refined and skillful manner. He once remarked:
"If I try to count all the qissas and books I have written throughout my life, I cannot recall them all—there are at least ten, perhaps even more."

Ahmad Yar also provided brief but insightful criticism of the works of earlier qissa writers. His opinions were honest and unbiased, which establishes him as one of the earliest critics in Punjabi literature.

His most famous work is Sassi, which resembles the version by Hafiz Barkhurdar. However, Ahmad Yar also appreciated the version written by Hasham, acknowledging its excellence. After Hasham, Ahmad Yar is considered one of the greatest qissa writers in Punjabi. His style is marked by simplicity, emotional depth, and historical richness, which significantly enriched the qissa tradition in Punjabi literature.

Ahmad Yar stands as a pillar of Punjabi literary heritage. Through his creative works, he enriched not only the Punjabi language but also its cultural identity. His writings provide not just literary pleasure but also reflect the social and cultural context of his time.

Ahmad Yar passed away in 1848 CE.
