Ajmer Rode is a renowned Canadian Punjabi writer who creates works in both Punjabi and English. He is considered a pioneer of Punjabi theater in Canada. Born in 1940 in the village of Rode, Jalandhar district, Indian Punjab, he hails from a farming family and grew up immersed in Punjabi culture. Rode earned a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Guru Nanak Engineering College, Ludhiana (affiliated with Punjab University) and later worked as an Assistant Professor in Punjab. In 1966, he immigrated to Canada, where he obtained an M.A.Sc. (Master of Applied Science) from the University of Waterloo, Ontario. This marked a significant turning point, steering him from engineering toward literature. After settling in Canada, he worked as a computer engineer at BC Hydro, and as a planning engineer and global warming specialist at BC Gas.

Rode has written poetry, plays, short stories, translations, essays, and science fiction, publishing over 20 books. His works primarily address social issues. His notable Punjabi poetry collections include *Surti*, *Shubh Chintan*, and *Leela*, and he has also written poetry in English. Additionally, Rode has contributed to translation and editorial work. He has directed, co-directed, and produced 10 plays.

Ajmer Rode has received numerous accolades, including the Best Overseas Punjabi Writer Award from the Punjab Language Department, Punjab; the Prominent Citizen (Literature) Award from Guru Nanak Dev University, Punjab; the Point of Life Award from Guru Nanak Engineering College, Ludhiana; a Certificate of Excellence (Theater) from the East Indian Workers’ Association, Toronto, Canada; the Outstanding Literary Achievement Award from the Rode Heritage Committee, Canada; the Anad Foundation Award, Delhi, India; the Mahfil Magazine Award for Literary Achievement, Vancouver, Canada; the Artistic Visionary Award from Darpan Magazine, Vancouver, Canada; and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of British Columbia, Canada, among others.
