Amrik Singh Punni
A contemporary poet and administrative officer.
Amrik Singh Puni was a well-wisher of Punjabi literature, a sensitive poet, and a skilled administrator. He was born on October 9, 1937, in the house of Gurdyal Singh. He obtained his B.A. in the first division and completed his M.A. in Political Science from Khalsa College, Jalandhar. Amrik Singh Puni rose from the simple environment of his village to attain the prestigious position of Chief Secretary of the Punjab Government. He was selected as an I.A.S. officer of the 1962 batch and served in various positions in Punjab.
In addition to administration, Amrik Singh Puni was also a renowned Punjabi poet. His first poetry collection, Kandiyale Raah, was published in 1974 and was warmly welcomed by readers and critics alike. Following that, works such as Nange Pair, Paani Vich Lakiraan, Moey Mausma Da Marsiya, Rutt Aaye Rutt Jaaye, Akhin Vekh Na Rajjiaan, Akhan Vekh Na Rajjiaan (again, possibly a repetition or variant), Akhan Wala Kya Vichara, and Asar Ton Sur Tak were published. His poetry is replete with satirical and sensitive interpretations of modern life. Amrik Singh Puni served as the President of the Punjabi Sahit Akademi three times consecutively. In 1986, he was awarded the M.S. Randhawa Award by the National Literature and Arts Council, and in 1989-90, the Dhaliwal Award for poetry. Additionally, the Language Department, Punjab, conferred the Best Literature Award for Paani Diyan Lakiraan and Moey Mausam Da Marsiya. In 1994, he was honored by Punjab as the Shiromani Punjabi Poet.
Amrik Singh Puni passed away on April 3, 2010, at the age of 73 in Ludhiana's DMC Hospital. On his demise, Punjab's Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal expressed profound grief. His life is a symbol of the golden chapter in administration and literature, which enriched Punjabi thought and ideology.
