Avatar Singh Azad was a distinguished Punjabi poet, writer, journalist, translator, and compassionate litterateur. He is particularly renowned for his significant contributions to epic poetry in the Punjabi language. Born on March 12, 1906, in the village of Gandiwind in Amritsar district of British Punjab, he was raised in his maternal village in a family deeply rooted in Sikhism and religious values. From an early age, he was drawn to literature and poetry, which played a pivotal role in shaping his future as a prominent Punjabi writer.

Avatar Singh received his early education in Amritsar and later ventured into journalism. He actively contributed to Punjabi newspapers and magazines, covering a wide range of topics. His journalistic work infused new energy into the Punjabi press, and he remained actively involved during the Indian freedom struggle.

His literary oeuvre includes poetry, translations, and prose. Among his notable poetry collections are *Kaidi Veer*, *Swant Boond*, *Sawan Peeghan*, *Vishav Vedna*, *Kansoan*, *Son Savera*, *Noori Jotan*, and *Ratnamala*. Additionally, he wrote epic poems such as *Mard Agammara*, *Vishavnoor*, *Mahabali*, and *Ratu Ka Kungu*. Avatar Singh Azad also penned a biography of the revolutionary martyr Bhagat Singh and translated significant works like *Chikha*, *Zafarnama*, and *Khayyam Khabmari*.

In recognition of his extensive contributions to literature and journalism, the Language Department of Punjab honored him as a *Shiromani Sahitkar* (Eminent Litterateur) in 1971. Avatar Singh Azad passed away in 1972.
