Beeba Balwant is a renowned Punjabi poet, art photographer, actor, and painter. He was born on 30 July 1945 in his maternal village, Rurka, in Ludhiana district. Beeba Balwant’s father was S. Sant Singh and his mother’s name was Gyan Kaur. His ancestral village was Jagraon. He received his primary education from R.K. High School, Jagraon. After that, he moved to Chandigarh, where he completed a five-year diploma in Applied Arts from the Government College of Arts. Beeba Balwant served for 34 years in the Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Department as a District Artist and Photographer in Gurdaspur.
Beeba Balwant began his literary journey in 1980 with the book Teriyan Gallan Tere Naan. After that, his poetry collections Phullan De Rang Kaale, Teeje Pehar Di Dhoop, Katha Saraape Birkh Di, Athroo Gulab Hoye, Man Nahin Das Bees, and Aanandu Bhiaa Meri Maae (Collected Poems) were published. In the year 2025, a children’s book titled Mitthi Rut was published. Along with these, Rana Haarya Nahin and Hun Phull Nahin Khirdhe are translated works. Beeba Balwant’s books have also been translated into English and Hindi, and his complete creative work has been published in Shahmukhi script from Lahore under the title Sahij Sukhan.
As a painter, Beeba Balwant expresses his emotions on canvas and preserves his poetic sensibility through colours. His workshop contains paintings, earthen pots, old cassettes, and samples of colours. He has worked as a director and actor in around fifteen plays. In addition to this, he has also worked in Punjabi films. He acted in the Punjabi feature film Vaisakhi, the telefilm Sarkandiyan De Des, Jalpari, and the film Iqraar, which is based on the story Nail Polish. While being associated with theatre and films, Beeba Balwant has also remained connected with song and music. He produced the albums Sun Mere Meeta and Heer Di Taqdeer Na.
For his contributions to literature and art, Beeba Balwant has received numerous honours, including the Hazara Singh Gurdaspuri Award, Punjabi Lok Likhari Manch Batala Award, Amrita Imroz Award, and the Mahakavi Bhai Santokh Singh Award, among others.
At present, Beeba Balwant is living in Gurdaspur. He is a person of a wandering temperament, devoted to the subtle arts, multifaceted, tender-hearted, sensitive, and the owner of a sincere and refined personality.
