Bhagwan Singh

Birth
1805

Bhagwan Singh was a renowned qissa (romantic ballad) writer from the Malwa region of Punjab during the British colonial period. In addition to composing the Qissa Heer, he authored several other notable works, including Sohni Mahiwal, Mirza Sahiban, Jiuna Mod, and various other short poetic compositions.

Bhagwan Singh is regarded as a prominent qissakaar (narrative poet) of the Malwa region. He was born in 1842 in the village of Mehraj Nathana, Tehsil Moga, District Firozpur (now in Bathinda, Punjab). He was a celebrated poet of the latter half of the 19th century. Bhagwan Singh never married and dedicated his entire life to the creation and enrichment of Punjabi literature.

His works reflect a deep understanding of the Punjabi language, the local Malwai dialect, regional culture, and oral folk traditions. The influence of Punjabi folk heritage and Sufi elements is clearly visible in his poetry.

Bhagwan Singh authored several narrative poems including Chitta Jiuna Morh, Baranmah, Sohni Mahiwal, and Mirza Sahiban. However, what makes him especially significant is that he was the first poet to compose Heer in the Kabitt poetic meter. His rendition of Heer is considered the most artistically refined, entertaining, and popular version of the legend.

Due to his literary contributions, Bhagwan Singh was held in high esteem and received special honor in the royal courts of Nabha and Patiala.

He passed away in 1902. Through his qissas, Bhagwan Singh enriched the traditions of Punjabi folk literature and the art of kavishri (oral poetic performance).
