Bishan Singh Upashak
A prominent stage poet, short-story writer, novelist, and editor.
Bishan Singh Upashak (May 26, 1919 – November 1, 1968) was a renowned Punjabi poet, short story writer, novelist, translator, and editor. He was born in Lamba village, Hoshiarpur district, Punjab. His father’s name was Mistri Rala Singh, and his mother’s name was Aati. Due to financial constraints at home, he could not complete his formal education, but through his talent and self-study, he made significant contributions to Punjabi literature.
Bishan Singh Upashak excelled in poetry, short stories, novels, and translations. His works deeply explored social issues, human emotions, and various aspects of life. His major poetic works include Upashna, Khooni Deewar, Mahal Te Jhuggian, Suha Salu, Dharti Di Agg, Majeethi Chola, Jaam Surahian, Sardal, Basant Bahar, Ratandeep, and Mehfil. These works reflect his sensitivity, social awareness, and poetic style.
Upashak also contributed to literary editing and was associated with various literary magazines. He served as the first supervisory editor and later the chief editor of the magazine Jeevan published from Bombay, and subsequently, he was the editor of Jagmag magazine published from Phagwara. His writings prominently highlighted themes such as Punjabi folk life, love, separation, and social inequalities.
Tragically, on November 1, 1968, he passed away in a road accident. Although his life was short, his literary contributions left an indelible mark on Punjabi literature.
