Eminent poet, writer, and critic.

Dr. Gurcharan Singh is a prominent poet, story writer, critic, and translator in Punjabi literature. He was born on February 8, 1917 AD, in the village of Ravi Pur in the Kapurthala district of Punjab. Dr. Gurcharan Singh attained higher education. He holds first-class degrees in M.A. English and M.A. Punjabi.

Dr. Gurcharan Singh began his career in 1947 AD as an Assistant District Reconstruction Officer and went on to serve in various high-ranking government and non-governmental positions. In 1954 AD, while working as an Information Officer in the PEPSU Public Relations Department, he joined the Education Department and was appointed as a Senior Lecturer at Mahindra College, Patiala. During this period, he also completed his Ph.D. degree in 1964 AD. Thereafter, Dr. Gurcharan became a Reader at Punjabi University in 1966 AD and served as Principal of Khalsa College, Patiala for some time. In July 1972 AD, he also held the position of Vice Chairman of the Punjab School Education Board for a few years.

Dr. Gurcharan Singh was a multifaceted personality. He wielded his pen across all forms of literature, from lyrical songs to epics, short stories to novels, one-act plays to full-length dramas, biographies to criticism. His poetry collections include *Agnavind*, *Tikhavant*, *Geet Mere Geet*, *Dharti Da Sandhoor* (an epic), *Teen Angi*, *Gurcharan Ghazal*, *Khande Di Bela*, *Bhagat Singh Di Vaar*, and *Benta Udham Singh*, among others. The prominent themes in his poems include opposition to social injustice, nationalist sentiments, the depth of human relationships with the earth, and religious-spiritual contemplation. In addition, he authored novels, short story collections, plays, criticism, biographies, and books in English. In recognition of his literary services, the Punjab Language Department awarded him the Shiromani Sahitkar Award.
