Gurtej Koharwala is a renowned Punjabi ghazal poet, recognized as one of the prominent figures in contemporary Punjabi ghazal poetry. He was born on August 15, 1961, in the village of Koharwala, located in Punjab’s Faridkot district. Initially, he worked at the Punjab State Electricity Board, but later shifted his focus to literature and education. During 1989-90, he earned an M.Phil degree from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and began working as a lecturer. In 1995, he joined R.S.D. College in Firozpur as a faculty member and eventually retired as the head of the Punjabi department.

Gurtej Koharwala’s writing style is serious and sensitive, using ghazals to highlight the harsh realities of the contemporary world. His first ghazal collection, *Paani da Haashia* (The Margin of Water), gained significant recognition in the Punjabi literary world. His poetry deeply explores human emotions and objective realities, connecting readers with social and personal crises. His ghazals uniquely blend emotional depth and realism, as evident in one of his lines:  
"Like others, I would’ve carried the darkness, living through the night.  
Had my heart not caught fire, what need would I have for light?"

He has received several accolades for his contributions to Punjabi literature, including the Punjabi Kavi Devneet Memorial Award in 2015, presented during a literary event in Mansa. Gurtej Koharwala is considered a key contributor to the development of the Punjabi language and literature, and his works continue to inspire readers.
