Harinder Singh Roop was a poet, writer, and critic of Punjabi literature, who enriched Punjabi poetry with new colors and depth. He was born in August 1907 in Amritsar. His father Giani Gurbaksh Singh was a prominent barrister, whose family was respected in educational and religious fields during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Harinder Singh Roop received a literary environment from childhood itself.
Harinder Singh Roop got his early poems revised by Lala Dhani Ram Chatrik and became his disciple. Chatrik taught him artistic style and linguistic precision, due to which a new freshness came into his poetry. His poetry collections include Navein Pandh, Doonghe Vahan, Shaanan Mere Punjab Diyan, etc. In addition to this, he also wrote Lok Varan, Himalaya Di Var, Manukh Di Var, and Punjab Diyan Varan. Besides poetry and vars, Harinder Singh Roop also wrote books related to satirical essays, essays, criticism, and religious criticism. He gave a progressive color to Punjabi literature, where he wove social justice, humanity, and Guru thoughts into poetry. In Harinder Singh Roop's poetry, topics such as painting, art, culture, and etiquette etc. were presented in a poetic manner for the first time.
Harinder Singh Roop's death occurred on January 25, 1954 A.D., due to a bullet wound from his maternal uncle in a dispute over the division of property.
