Kanwar Chauhan
A representative voice of Punjabi ghazal, a poet who achieved a distinct place in literature with a single collection, "Jungle Vich Shaam." Remarkably, this book was published several years after his death.
Punjabi ghazal poet Kanwar Chauhan was born on June 22, 1932. He spent most of his life in Nabha, where he also served as a health visitor at the government hospital. In connection with his professional duties, he also spent some time in Sangrur.
Kanwar Chauhan began writing ghazals in Punjabi at a time when there was an ongoing debate about whether the ghazal form could be effectively expressed in the Punjabi language. At a moment when the genre’s suitability was under question, Chauhan not only mastered the formal metrical aspects of the ghazal but also enriched it with deeply humanistic concerns and a philosophical depth. His understanding of music gave his words a lyrical and melodic quality, enhancing the aesthetic resonance of his poetry.
Although he wrote only one collection of ghazals, it was published posthumously after his death on August 27, 1995. The collection, titled Jungle Vich Shaam (Evening in the Forest), was published in 1999. In recognition of his literary contribution, admirers established the "Kanwar Chauhan Memorial Ghazal Award" to honor his legacy. His sons, Baljinder Chauhan and Jaininder Chauhan, have also carried forward the poetic tradition.
