Kesar Singh Neer

A poet and children's litterateur.

Kesar Singh Neer was a famous expatriate Punjabi poet, ghazal writer and litterateur. His birth took place on May 13, 1935 AD in the village Chhajawal of Ludhiana district. Kesar Singh Neer had a passion for writing poetry since school time and in the eighth class he started writing religious poems. He obtained M.A. and B.Ed. degrees and worked as a teacher. In Punjab, he remained active in teachers' movements and also fought the battle for teachers' rights and even spent a few months in jail. After that, he went to Canada and settled in Calgary. There, he also worked as the president of Arpan Likhari Sabha, Calgary.

Kesar Singh Neer was a famous ghazal writer of Prin. Takht Singh's ghazal school. He has put more than a dozen books into the lap of Punjabi literature, among which poetry collections Kasakan, Gham Nahin, Aar Diyan Paar Diyan, Mehkan Di Peer, and in ghazal collections Kirna De Bol, Anvage Athru are prominent. Through children's books Gaunde Baal, Jhilamajh Jhilamajh Taare, Phull Rang Birange and Mithiyan Muskanan, he also gave his contribution to children's literature.

Kesar Singh Neer was honored by many literary societies and institutions. Among which, he was honored by the Language Department Punjab as Shiromani Punjabi Sahitkar and by Arpan Likhari Sabha Calgary with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Kesar Singh Neer's demise occurred on April 5, 2025 AD in Canada.
