Poet, journalist, and chief editor of the daily Ajit newspaper. Recipient of the Padma Shri Award from the Government of India.

Dr. Sadhu Singh Hamdard is a prominent name in Punjabi journalism, who not only left a unique mark in journalism but also established his identity in the literary field. He was born in 1918 in the village of Paddi Matwali, District Jalandhar, into a simple farming family. His full name was Sadhu Singh Saini, and Hamdard was his pen name. From childhood, he became associated with freedom movements and became active in revolutionary activities during high school, joining the Yug Paltaoo Dal.He completed his education from primary level up to Ph.D.

In 1944, Sadhu Singh Hamdard began working in the field of journalism and became the editor of the Urdu daily Ajit newspaper. Thereafter, he served as the chief editor of the Punjabi Ajit newspaper. He left an indelible mark on Punjabi journalism, infused new flavor into Punjabi writing, and introduced several new methods. He was also the editor of monthly magazines like Tasveer and Drishti.

In his literary journey, Sadhu Singh Hamdard created works in both Urdu and Punjabi languages. His poetry is satirical and socially oriented. His works include Ghazal, Akkhi Dittha Roos, Rang Sugandh, Vaas Suvaas, Bhanwar Machda Raha, Takkar, Make Up, and others.

Dr. Sadhu Singh Hamdard was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1984, but he returned this honor in June 1984 in protest against the military operation carried out by the Indian Army on Sri Harmandir Sahib.

He passed away on July 29, 1984.
