The beginning of modern

Punjabi literature is generally considered to be from the second half of the 19th century. During this period, poets began moving away from traditional thought patterns and classical poetic forms, bringing into their writing the challenges and struggles of contemporary human life. This era saw the emergence of writers who reflected social reality with greater depth and awareness. Prominent among them are Bhai Vir Singh, Prof. Puran Singh, Krupalal Sagar, and Dhani Ram Chatrik, who played a significant role in shaping modern Punjabi literary expression.
