kavitaayen on Partition

In 1947, the country

certainly became independent from British rule. However, Punjab was divided into two parts. Indian Punjab came to be called East Punjab, and Pakistani Punjab came to be known as West Punjab. During this partition, approximately five lakh (500,000) people were massacred. This wound inflicted on the heart of Punjab still continues to bleed within Punjabis in one form or another. During this division, not only was the land split into two pieces, but literature, culture, and arts were also divided. Because Punjabi came to be written in two scripts, people of the same region became deprived of reading each other’s literature. A considerable amount of literature regarding the partition was created in both East and West Punjab.
