Ajaib Chitrakar holds a special place in Punjabi ghazal. His poetry consistently conveys a message of struggle and social equality. In addition to his original writings, he also translated several books.
Ajab Chitrakar is an important figure in the world of Punjabi literature and art. He was not only a painter but also enriched Punjabi literature through his deep and socially conscious poems. He was born on February 18, 1924, in the village of Ghawaddi in Ludhiana district, to S. Bachan Singh. From childhood, his interest in art and literature set him apart and made him unique.
Ajab Chitrakar spent most of his life in Punjab. He worked as an artist at Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana, where he honed and developed his artistic talents.
In 1940, Ajab Chitrakar began his literary journey by composing poetry. Initially, he wrote songs related to husn-ishq (the theme of beauty and love), but later his works became imbued with social issues, human emotions, and romantic sentiments. He was also a master of ghazals, and his romantic poems remain influential to this day. His poetry collections include *Dumel*, *Bhulekhe*, *Surajmukhia*, *Sajri Pair*, *Char Jug*, *Awazaan de Rang*, *Zakhamia Khayal da Chehra*, *Nagme da Libas*, and *Supniyaan da Tapu*.
In addition, he authored long poems and kavi-kathas (poetic narratives), including *Mahan Sikander*, *Manukh Biti*, *Punjab di Kahani*, and *Sach da Suraj*.
In recognition of his literary contributions, he received numerous awards and honors. Among them are the Bawa Balwant Award from the Punjabi Sahit Trust in Dhudike, and the Bal Sahit Award from the Language Department of Punjab. He was also honored with the Punjabi Sahit Award by the Language Department of Punjab.
He bid farewell to this smiling world in 2012.
